She's still a newbie champion, fangirling over the older ones was such a nice touch. I think that's why its easier for the writers to give her appearances. No Iris appearance feels tacked, if anything her participating on the M8 (whether she loses against Cynthia or Ash) feels HUGE for her character.
Having a now evolved Haxorus compared to the shitty Axew also pairs up so well with her - the little preview of him sweeping an attack from Cynthia's Milotic with Dragon Tail made him look so fucking badass
