I think that an interesting way to count the total numbers of injuries allowed would be to apply a -1 to the trauma dice for each injury. It’d be a lot less arbitrary and more like the pokemon is getting progressively weaker.
I’d also consider keeping one of the injured pokemon’s moves off-limits until they level up, but idk if that’s too far.
