D/P's Pokemon selection was so bad that literally every team ran Shinx and Staraptor because they were the only new non-shitmons till Floraroma Town. Everything up till then is Bidoof, Zubat, Geodude, Machop and Budew, so by the time you get to actual half decent Pokemon, Shinx and Starly will have ingrained themselves in your team.
Average D/P team is as follows
>Starter>Staraptor>Luxray>Required HM Slave>Giftmon/HM Slave 2>Giftmon/Legend/Random Gen 4 PokemonTruly the worst game in the series, at least X/Y and S/M give you a decent amount of team building options.
