Dragon Quest's used this mimic design for nearly it's entire life without changes, even after moving to 3D, because they understood from the get go the basis of a mimic is to be believably deceptive in both the meta sense AND in-universe, because what the fuck is the POINT of a mimic in a game if it's not even believable in that game's already fantastical setting?
