I haven't touched Renegade Platinum yet, but, Sacred Gold/Storm Silver is fantastic and Rising Ruby/Sinking Sapphire turned ORAS from barely passable to amazing. I have a soft spot for sensible rebalancing of Mons and a higher difficulty curve for the Pokemon games though.
While I'm less familiar with his work I think I can easily recommend Dio's stuff too though. Supernova Sun/Penumbra Moon's battles were done extremely well and left me feeling satisfied after completing them.
Here's hoping hackers and modders can fix the train wreck that Gen 8 is shaping up to be like they fixed 6/7.
