After looking at the sprites for Slugma and Magcargo, I noticed some things about them that made me question what they were originally intended to be. Looking at the Slugma in particular, it's obviously purple instead of red, and it lacks the flaming eyes and bubbling lava from the original. The body itself looks a lot like Grimer's and Muk's in fact. Apparently somebody asked about this and they were answered that it wasn't supposed to be purple, which brings me to Magcargo. Magcargo's rock shell lacks any holes and as such, lacks any flames protruding from the shell. Despite the fact that it's actually red and has shading to indicate that it's lava, it also lacks the bubbling lava that the final design has.
My theory is that Slugma was originally a Poison type and Magcargo was originally a Poison/Rock type, but they were changed to Fire and Fire/Rock respectively, to differentiate their designs from the Grimer and Muk line. Magcargo's sprite was then edited but Slugma's was not, since the change was only now becoming a thing.
