In my opinion, it retains enough features from the previous forms but still changes enough to be more than a larger sliggoo. And, compared to the others, i think blob is actually one of the better ones. I've never been a GAD fan, so Kommo-o isn't my thing. And i've just never used hydreigon when i played BW so i don't really care much for it. Maybe it's just because i'm a degenerate i don't know.
Metagross is top tier, though.

Dragon is one of the strongest types in the game by virtue of having the strongest pokemon, not by the type itself. If volcarona was a little stronger and became the gen-V pseudo instead i imagine people would be more hopeful for designs.
