I truly wanted a rival character Mendo who will often have petty fight with Ash over silly reason as they develop a weird friendship where they would screw with each other but would work together for a common goal. Maybe this rival develop an instant crush on Serena which leads to his petty rivalry with Ash.
May had Harley, Dawn has Ursula, Iris has Gerogia and Cilan had Burgundy. I do not get why the anime never introduced an adversarial silly rival for Ash and kept pushing bunch of edgelord with a personality of brick wall as his rival! Specially when Galar introduce a good candidate like Bede.
