SwSh, PLA, and SV all allow you to explore a large section of the overworld where you can battle and capture a large amount of Pokemon. AKA you can start playing the game almost immediately (within 10-15 minutes) even if you haven't gone to the tutorial objective yet. Meanwhile, SM/USUM ties you down to its railroad tracks for 40+ minutes before moving you to another set of railroad tracks for the rest of the story.
