but, if given the option to express myself...
1. character creation. you can choose a pokemon to start as. maybe even incorporate class so you could have race/class, with abilities and stats based on species but also affected by class... making a game with all pokemons would take long, so how about make a few pokemons you like as playable?
2. maybe use sprites heartgold or something where the pokemon follows you for overworld travel.
3. maybe incorprate religion into it? like in pokemonn there are various daities, and you can like, choosee a faction or somethhing. or am i getting to dnd here? i just remembered the gods ware a part i really liked in another rpg, 'elona'
4. an open world with scaling enemies. make-

i guess i you wante just to make a mod of elona instead it would be pretty simple. just change the spritesheet and maybe the names on the scripts.
