The problem with stories in Pokemon games is that Game Freak takes the most braindead route when it comes to getting the stories across: excessive interruptions, many of which are redundant, and the railroading in general, which hurts the pacing of the game.
Pic related is an 100 hour long story focused JRPG but not once did I get annoyed with it the way I did with GF's games because the story and gameplay were all well paced. You could easily have an hour or two of gameplay in this game without being interrupted by cutscenes.
You can't say the same for Pokemon games like SM, especially the with the shorter routes and utter lack of dungeons. It gets to a point where being stopped every route and town after 5 minutes of gameplay becomes tedious. Even people who liked SM admitted the game was a pain in the ass to replay because of all the interruptions. How many times do we need to see Lillie tell her mon to get in the bag?
Story in Pokemon can work but the way GF has been going about is atrocious.
