It could even be linked to the "ancient civilization" that is mentioned here and there. What if the entirely of Paldea was terraformed? What if the mysterious metal place in the crater is a quite literal blueprint, made by the ancient civilization?
The professor also keeps talking about wanting to create their own paradise, and they studied Terapagos or whatever the turtle mon at the bottom of the crater is. If this theory is true, then it's possible that they knew about it. That's really interesting.
