Most of the people that hate him are extremely hardcore Ash fanatics that don't like the idea of another guy hanging around him without acting like a subordinate. His final arc sucks balls but his other focus episodes are great. And he canonically fucked Dawn, which is pretty crazy given the show's usual age rating.
