just my 2 cents but if you ask me the most "mature" thing a fangame can do is to worldbuild while understanding things that can't fit in pokemon like cussing like a madman or blood and guts on screen.
gen 1 didn't have blood and guts at all times, you had possessed people saying "give me blood" but that's not even that bad. gen 1, and many other times in the series may i add, relied on implications or not spending much time on the more "mature" aspects. for example, marowak was mentioned to have been killed by team rocket but there wasn't a bloody melodramatic scene showing them whipping it to death.
i believe pokemon can do more than be a complete utopia but if you ask me the problem is that most of the edgelords attempting this go far beyond what the limit is and even then that's an understatement and the fact that it's still a delicate thing even without that. something i like to think would be best is the implication there's some dark sides to the world but still a light hearted enjoyable experience that doesn't try to make it all about how DEEP and MATURE its "themes" are at all times
