江湖, lit rivers and lakes, occasionally translated as 'world of river and lakes' or 'the martial world', is in effect is a second state within a state, wherein martial artists and sects exist. As a side note, often in triad movies, they often refer to the criminal underworld as the Jianghu.
Typically, the martial artists thereof make sure not to intervene in matters of the 'regular world.'
The Deer and the Cauldron by Jin Yong is an exception but that book is many exceptions, quite frankly.
Anyway, while there isn't really a well codified universal setting bible for this sort of thing, there very much are very common tropes and terminologies. A QRD.
Righteous/Orthodox Sects are basically the mainstream folks, adhering to the regular cultural norms of civilised society, and often have pretty good reputations amongst the common folk.
Demonic Sects are considered evil and ostracised. Often because they use evil techniques that involve a gratuitous amount of people killing and life draining.
As another a side note, the word Shota (正太) https://zh.wikipedia.org/zh-tw/%E6%AD%A3%E5%A4%AA is used verbatim in the story (to describe A-yu, obviously).
While I feel like you, and possibly everyone else in thread, should know this, the term Shota derives from Shotacon complex, which in itself is taken from fan-magazine letter answer in the 1980s regarding the giant robot manga, Tetsujin 28, which has the cute little boy Shotaro Kaneda as its main protagonist.
So, there's stuff that's definitely waya anachronistic.
