I think they add an extra dynamic to move selection especially. I'm running Assault Vest Tsareena with Trop Kick/Hi Jump Kick/Rapid Spin/Knock Off and the sheer variety of options she has across those moves and their passive effects AND the Max variants is great to play with. Additionally, the concept serves to bring weather and terrains to a position where they are relevant, more dynamic, but not Gen 5 tier constant.
I understand that the prediction factor required to play with it is annoying to some, but is prediction not literally the core of the entire battle system? The entire game is about knowledge of the opponents tools, and prediction based off assessment of their available options.
