You can capture/kidnap a random pokemon in the forest throw it into a PC and never take it out for the rest of your life, wouldn't that be considered abandonment? Its arguably even worse because the Pokemon can't choose to leave. But Pokemon's been filled with loads of ethical and moral problems like this so...yeah..
