This expansion will be the first expansion of three expansions released over the next 3 years. Each expansion will have some new galar variants, new legendaries and galar legendaries, and small new areas to explore with minor new characters to populate said area. Each game will also have 200 old pokemon, so over the span of 3 years we will get 600 old pokemon which will complete the entire national pokedex. They will do this because they will make far more money selling 3 DLC's (90$ total) plus selling the base game (60$) = $150 for all the sw/sh content, than they would making sw/sh2 or a 3rd game, and expansions are far less work as well especially over 3 years than a 3rd game would be to make in 2 years. This is the future of pokemon, gamefreak can justify keeping their tiny incompetent team, and justify cutting pokemon to re-add them in DLC's as a selling point.
