I'd start by making a rombase compiled from tons of assets. No need to reinvent the wheel when the community has already put so much generic resources together. Modder pride is weird, what they're doing is all illegal in Nintendo's eyes anyways. As long as shit keeps circulating the current state of mod development is secured.
The mention of Zera reminds me to the topic of game mechanics. Are they easier edited in Essentials or a disassembly+hack tools? For my purposes specifically: Editing existing moves. Stuff like making Acid SE against Steel or Scald SE against Ice. On the more complicated end, having Hail reduce the speed of all non-ice types by 20% for the duration. Or fuck it just defining completely new moves into your game.
