I did pretty much exactly what you're contemplating, just a few months ago. Bought a 2ds on craigslist for $50 before SM came out, bought Sun, and later bought X to play through because I had never played it and Sun was kind of unsatisfying.
I would say its not really worth it, they aren't really fun games, but if you're seriously itching to play some pokemon idk its not that expensive, especially because you can probably get SM used for cheaper than I got it for.
Still, the games are a lot of unnecessary handholding that I could of done without. You might want to just emulate something else idk.
