It originated because of the old Jewish belief that one's death would correlate with the date of their conception. Since the traditional date of the crucifixion was March 25, that also became the date of his immaculate conception, and Christians merely added 9 months to that and got December 25. Was it right? Probably not. Does it matter? Nope. March 25 is still celebrated as the Feast of the Annunciation and December 25 as Christmas.
