I guess it was also far too expensive for my family at the time, but I did get a few things like those pokemon glass marbles.
My earliest memory of emulation was getting a shitty Nokia phone which I installed a java GBC emulator (meboy) to run on Nokia's SymbianOS. It didn't work if the ROM+emulator was >1mb and Silver was the only one which fit.
I smuggled it into bed with me and picked Chikorita. Framerate was pretty atrocious and the emulator was buggy as a fuck but I didn't care.
