It's too bad the story is absolute shit though. There's no consistency in character writing, lots of edgy stuff just... happens, because. It's hard to get invested in it properly, because it can get so pointlessly grim for so long, that you just stop caring. Halfway through the game, I desperately missed the first couple of Gym Leaders because they provided a much more bearable vibe.
