I remember rumors at school that shiny pokemon were more powerful than regular ones but the red gyarados didn't seem any stronger than my regular gyarados so I boxed it right away and went back to using my feraligatr.
I fremember spending hours trying to find a pink butterfree after getting red gyarados though.
I don't remember if an NPC alludes to there being one in the game or if that was another fake rumor in school.
