DQ8 is your classic pure JRPG adventure and one of the last times a game actually felt like going on a long journey to me. Emulate the PS2 original, DON'T play the 3DS remake, some minor extra content is not worth the fucked up graphics imo.
FFTA2 has a notoriuosly shitty story that goes nowhere, but mechanically speaking it's a true wonder. It may unironically be the most polished tactics game in history and it has the most fun job system I've ever seen in a video game.
