I've never understood this argument, since it's basically saying that they want to pretend to be a dense 10-year-old guy and have he 10-year-old girl even as they also somehow simultaneously want said guy and said girl to be with each other. I like Amour, but neither me nor any other Amourshipper I know actually "self-inserts." We like it on its own merits for being cute and something different, even as they also realize it's not great writing.
The only person I know who actually buys into this ebin self-insert maymay is CyberCubed, and he's not exactly known for being smart or for being anything more than a porn-obsessed waifufag, and he prefers May anyways, because boobs.
