Crits are in place so that recover spamming garbage, as well as defensive boosting that takes 100 turns is not viable. Simple as that. It is there so that cheesy ass tactics game freak does not want in their games do not work. It has the side effect of causing a little bit of luck in the game, but overall crits are just as much in your favour as theirs, meaning that the best players will still be winning the most because they get crits too.
