The fuckers only real ability seems to be transporting people into the wilderness full of monsters. This isn't exactly a scenario Ash is unfamiliar with. If he brought his six strongest mons he'd probably be able to take anything Max threw at him, and getting to his lair would be a breeze.
The only downside is that kicking Maxwell off the Nightmare Throne probably wouldn't end up working well for Ash in the end.
