Serena was obviously the one and only time they've wanted to have a somewhat serious "romance arc" in the series, and that's most likely how it will stay.
Does this mean Serena will suddenly come back at the last moment to marry Ash? Ehhh, I also REALLY doubt that, her story with Ash is pretty much done and I don't think they'll have Ash bother with romance in these last episodes. Maybe she'll show up in the obligatory "wow look at all the past companions" moment (whether it's in person or in the sky remains to be seen), but she won't suddenly propose to Ash or anything.
My bet is that Misty will get some interactions with Ash that shippers will naturally gush about, but nothing straight up romantic like when Ash and Serena kissed, and that Serena will also show up at some point, she won't get any big moment, but she will be there like Misty and all the other companions.
Or I could be completely wrong, we'll just have to wait and see.
