Maybe I'm wrong here but: the problem with the idea that the books weren't modified in the last 10 years is that it requires Briar to be the assistant, and for Briar to be part of the Research Team since the very first entry. This doesn't make sense for a couple of reasons:
1. If Briar was an assistant since the first entry, it doesn't make sense that they were also the "new assistant that is a bit rigid" in the latter entries.
2. Briar herself says that she doesn't have permission to access Area Zero yet. If she was in the Research Team, it doesn't really make a lot of sense that she doesn't have access to it anymore.
I think it's much more likely that people just didn't take the book seriously and eventually it was forgotten to time (as was said in the history classes), that only a few people like the Professors believed it, and that then a "second edition" of the books with those parts blacked out and made illegible were released to substitute the old published version.
