FRLG are really solid entries in the series. RBY has aged really poorly (I'm a "Genwunner" but while my nostalgia allows me to hold GS are still the best games in the series, RB have blatant issues on revisit.. I haven't enjoyed replaying Blue on VC) so that to me FRLG has ended up as the definitive version of the Kanto story.
There's also a bit of nostalgia for me in FRLG's favor as well – I loathed RS, so between FRLG, Colosseum, and XD, that's all I had to get fun out of the franchise from 2004 until DP came out in about 2006. I don't really play video games from other franchises, so I ran the clock in Coloseum well past the 99:99 limit, FRLG was somewhere in the hundreds, etc.
