Call it a meme but that one anon is completely write, the biggest benefit of SM/JN was adapting Ash's design to Ken sugimori's modern eye design, allowing all the other cast members use their original much more appealing design to jive with it.
I just wish they had done it a bit better. You didn't need to round out the design *that much*, just adapting the eyes would be enough, see pic related.
