Pic related is some weird ds-to-TV mod someone did, but the key takeaway here is that the colors on the DS screen are clearly oversaturated compared to the properly-calibrated CRT monitor. If you're talking about the colors being comparatively more muted, that's because the 3DS has more natural colors. See also the original DS model.
