If I recall correctly the colosseums were setup like this without counting the first time around which is essentially baby mode and balanced for mid to late game teams in DPPt or the default rental passes:
>Gateway collosseum is Rental battle where you trade your pokemon with your opponent at the end, gets tougher the more you clear it so you can obtain stronger pokemon>Main Street Colosseum is a regular knockout battle format>Waterfall Colosseum format is "Team Battle", in which each person chooses five Pokémon to go into a series of one-on-one battles, with each victory gaining a point for the team and the first to three points wins that round and advances to the next person.>Neon Colosseum is essentially an RNG battle format where your pokemon and opponents get put on a roulette and you get to use whatever the roulette gives you, so you could potentially face your own pokemon>Crystal colosseum is a tournament format, so its also pretty vanilla like main street with the exception being that you don't always face the same trainers in the same order due to tournament format>Sunny Park colosseum is essentially little cup from stadium games>Magma Colosseums format depended on how many pokemon you lost as a sort of point system to determine who gets to face the colosseum leader>Sunset Colosseum is basically battle factory but even better since both you and your opponent choose from the same pool of 12 pokemon>Courtyard colosseum is battle tower/mt battle>Stargazer colosseum for one of the hardest double battle knockout formats you will fight encountering even uber pokemon with powerful competitive sets that will catch you off guard if you don't research them firstBut yes in a sense it was much better than battle frontier in retrospect. Much more variety. I'd take this over the gym leader castle which is just repetitive knockout battles the entire way where you just abuse the gyms type weakness.
