Mass Effect, where the player thinks he's in charge of the character on the screen, but both the hero AND the player are actually being gaslit. Suppose that the starter is a psychic type. Now imagine if you could release your starter just like any other pokemon, but its stats and abilities will almost *always* make the player choose not to. Suppose that the game gives the player dialogue choices, and rewards the player with bonus items for making thematic choices that go in line with what your starter pokemon would want you to do. Hell, make the dialogue choices color-coded and condition the player to instinctively choose the blue option. Then make the big plot twist reveal, that your psychic type has been manipulating the protagonist the entire time, giving the illusion of free will.
Just imagine how much this would mindfuck the average 12 year old who plays pokemon.
