I have to admit, now that I've had a chance to give them both time, I think I prefer following pokemon to Amie. The latter is fun but it inevitably gets to the point where "Oh you're just about to get to the next tier of happiness, better play some games and feed you some blocks", where as with walking pokemon I could always just turn around and pat them whenever I felt the need. Also the location specific responses were a nice touch.
