See this kind of thread? This is someone going to check to see if the games work as expected in the Cable Club- I.E., when connecting to other games. (Spoiler alert, they surprisingly do.)
If these were mere romhacks, then A, they got the exact wrong kind of attention because every hacker and beta analysis guy on the planet is currently combing over these things to try and see what they can find, and B, they must be really good because those communities haven't yet found any red flags.
