I just find it absolutely wild how much the Pokemon design philosophies have shifted from the originals, ever since gen 3, while Digimon (Pokemon's closest competitor and having run for almost the same time) has maintained the exact same design principles throughout its life. Digimon from 1997 and 2021 go together perfectly fine, but Pokemon from 1996 and 2022 look like two completely different franchses.
How does it happen? We were told there were all sorts of guides and philosophies that went into designing Pokemon. What changed?
