They can release a new pair of games that, much like Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, will have mostly the same story and events with just a few minor additions and differences. In the new games, some of the old pokémon that aren't programmed into Sword/Shield will be available in the new games, but some old pokémon that are available in Sword/Shield won't be available in the new games. Then come the fossils: you get the reversed body parts. You'll find the lower part of the Zolt and Vish, and the upper parts of Draco and Arcto. And of course, you won't be able to exchange the fossil parts between the games.
