Lore-wise, Growlithes were transported to an all-new region, but were intentionally left deep in abandoned mines away from the sun. Over time, the Growlithes lost their connection to the sun and their Fire-typing, becoming nocturnal Dark-types instead. Once the Growlithes resurfaced, they are able to harness the energy of the full moon to evolve into the Dark/Fairy Lycanine.
