In both our world and the pokemon world there are MUSEUMS and museums, there are a few things they have in common.

Expositions
The museums in each region have different specialities. For example, in Kanto there's the "Pewter Museum of Science" has FOSSILS of Aerodactyl and others, in Sinnoh, the "Oreburgh Mining Museum" has exhibition on coal and its tools.
Research
Aside from expositions, museums also do research with their scientist personel. In Hoenn, Captain Stern from the "Oceanic Museum" specializes in the study of the ocean, in Unova, in the Nacrene Museum, there's Lenora the archeologist; and in Kanto there's the very own Professor Kaseki from this exhibition.
