I honestly don't know if what I just drew will get my point across but basically, as we map clockwise and initially there's a lot of freedom about the length of maps. We make careful not of the lengths of confirmed maps and have a wiki page that lets us know what length corresponding routes must be in order to make the map logically consistent.
So the squares on the proto map only have a fixed dimension relative to the squares they are parallel to. The size of the desert is not dictated by the size of route one.
Oh and a final point to remember. Caves are cheats. They do not have to 'match' the maps dimensions. Areas connected by a cave can be any distance from each other because the dimensions of the cave are not influenced by the exterior of the cave.
