Just sidesprites like literally any jrpg at the time
frontsprites was a thing of wrpgs and didnt really become popular over in japan before wizardry hit japan
i believe they even explicitly mentioned they were drawing upon inspiration from western rpgs in the interviews about the early stages of the game
honestly doesnt look bad, maybe a bit plain, but especially since the backsprites were upscaled in the rgby,
however if they only had sidesprites they could probably fit more detailed and colored mons
