The way everything is playing out they're basically shitting on years of the anime's history by avoiding obvious matchups for the tournament and not bringing back reserves to give closure to shit like the foreshadowing at the end of DP with Cynthia. At the same time having obviously strong trainers like Paul and Gary who easily belong in the masters 8 claim that they have no interest in the tournament means it's not actually the gathering of the strongest trainers which brings Leon's #1 position into question which doesn't help his character in the slightest when he's already massively disliked for being a Mary sue bitch who's done nothing to prove he really is the best all while game freak continues to try and shove him down our throats
