As is the case for most of us, I got into it when it first hit outside of Japan and never stopped enjoying it. I was too poor too enjoy Gen 1 games, so all I had were the cards, the anime and the various toys. Around mid to late 2001 I had enough cash to get a GBA and a copy of Gold. Shit was magical. Now to the questions:
1. Gold, and by extension, HeartGold. My first game and my so called "homeland". Spent countless hours playing it as a kid, then played countless hours playing it's spiritual successor as a late teen. Loved the pokemon, loved the region(s) and loved the lore.
2. No favorite really, only character I have any investment in is the MC.
3. Quagsire, definitely. Love it's typing and it's design. Can also wall the shit out of anything physically based that isn't a grass type and immune to poison or Earthquake.
4. Gen 2 and kinda gen 4, as stated above.
5. Don't get me wrong, I like Unova as a region and it's selection of pokemon, but it's removal of the Battle Frontier, Following Pokemon, Berry growing, an actually fun/challenging minigame/side game thingy and any form of a post game kinda leaves a sour taste in my mouth about it. Kalos falls under pretty much all of these catagories too, but has the potential to redeem it's self with updates/3rd version(s)
6. The battling and social interaction involved therein. Something I totally missed out on as a kid with Gold for the most part.
