Treat it like a "one big world" hack encompassing gens 1 3 4 and 5. The MMO part of it has always been fucked. Shiny hunting is like 10x as hard as vanilla, with no ways to increase odds.
I made a post a couple days ago to someone asking if it was worth playing and it boils down to this:
Do you want a slightly more challenging re-play of gens 1 3 4 and 5, with one account and pokemon shared throughout (though harder limitations on level capped pokemon making it so you can't just overgrind, or bring over your top tier pokemon from other regions)? Then yes. Give it a go.
Don't treat it like an MMO, because beside the GTL/online marketplace it's really not. They occasionally do events that allow multiple people to come together and battle legendaries, which is generally really fun, but it's like once or twice a year.
As is, I spend my time breeding. I'm going through the game on a new account and over the last couple years I've gotten, playing like once or twice a week, up towards gym 8 of sinnoh, my last region.
For me, it boils down to liking it more than PRO. I don't have to spend money to get access to pokemon, I don't have to grind a significant amount (none at all if I just make use of lucky eggs), and when I'm in the mood for it, there IS a battling scene, though if I'm in the mood for full on compsperging I'll just stick to showdown.
No pokemon MMO is ever going to work because there's not enough of an endgame with reason to partake. At least, nothing that would require other players. The moment you start taking away pokemon or items to give away to the mp component you isolate tons of people.
