It was stated as a possibility, not a fact. Yajima isn't working on the main anime now so that means that his word has no value, it wouldn't be different from using Shudo's novel as canon just because he was the original head writer.
Unless they confirm in an official way that Ash likes Serena as more than a friend too, it will stay as a head-canon.
