Today many people falsely believe that Grimer could not have existed before the advent of the modern industrial age and the many pollutants it has released into the environment. This is not true. Before the invention of factories Grimer were just very rare. Historiclaly they would congregate around volcanoes and geothermal vents where they would feed off of noxious elements released from beneath the Earth's crust.
Some scientists believe these Grimer likely had some different abilities from their modern brethren as the specific substances they were composed of would have been different. It has been theorized that more exotic forms of Grimer may be found deep beneath the Earth in oil deposits or at the bottom of hard to reach caves. Others still speculate that some inhospitable planets in the solar system could be host to alien forms of Grimer, or that Grimer could survive in these alien environments if introduced.
