Sure enough, for the most part, I think Ash's relationship with Serena is just like the one with the other girls, but there is way more stuff implied about his own feelings than with other girls, with the sole exception being Misty. Ash is overprotective of Serena and all touchy touchy with her, not couting their importance towards each other's main goal, because other characters helped Ash just as much before.
