I remember first learning about this in middle school from my Language Arts teacher. She told me he is the default pronoun for a person, you only use she if you know that the person is a woman. Then when I got to high-school English the teacher there corrected me, informing me that he wasn’t the pronoun you use when you don’t know the gender of someone, you are supposed to use they.
I try to use he in these gender neutral contexts, but it often results in causing confusion for my peers.
